I truly have to say that the ATH ES7 headphones have changed the way I enjoy music. I felt like I needed to buy the ath es7 cans for a couple of reasons.
* I have different musical taste than my wife, and with the ATH ES7 portable headphones, I can listen to my music privately. Recently, we have had a few squabbles over the volume of my music. By the same token, she can listen to her music at whatever volume she wants. The ATH ES7 headphones are "closed" style, so music does not "leak" out to the environment.
* I travel extensively, and I wanted a model that is totally portable. On the road, I find it very difficult to find the kind of music that I like. I have a high stress job, and music is one of the few things that relaxes me. The Audio Technica ATH ES7 cans would be perfect for those long layovers in busy airports. I can just settle back, listen to my smooth jazz, and watch the world go by!
And, as I mentioned previously, I would not be distracting any of my fellow passengers. I also planned to use the ATH ES7 with my brand new Mp3 player, and other portable audio devices.
* I needed headphones that would not totally "cancel" noise. While shopping for headphones, I came across two models that supposedly blocked out all ambient noise. I tested both the mdr-v700, and the mdr-v900, back to back.
They sounded great, and they actually did block out about 85% of outside sounds. However, they were kind of heavy, and not as comfortable as my ATH ES7 phones. The real problem with them, though, is that I have 2 small children.
I definitely need to be able to hear them, should the need arise. I found that with the ATH ES7 headphones, I could easily hear outside voices directed at me. Also, i frequently have to hear important airport announcements, and my home phone ringing. My cellphone is not an issue, as I can easily set it on "vibrate", to be alerted.
So, those were the reasons that i felt like i needed the ATH ES7 headphones. I was really shocked when I first took them out of the box! I could not believe...
